Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

January 05, 2016

When winter strikes and we start getting calls about furnaces that aren't producing heat, the majority of them can be tracked back to a lack of regular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace issues are not handled, your system may suddenly stop running and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a few warning signs you can be on the lookout for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system stops running.

Furnace Age

The average life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Choosing a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in an emergency. Give yourself enough time to research and weigh all of your options.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been properly maintained. Imagine the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be going towards purchasing a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last couple years of a furnace's life are when your system ends up with the most breakdowns. Begin adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the previous two years - a new system could be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange sounds coming from your system? Furnaces start making weird noises at the end of their lifecycle. If your furnace is switching on and off frequently or blowing chilly air, it's time to consider getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home all that well. Your home may start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies might notice increased symptoms. A couple other signs are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
