Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely made it through winter in Huntsville just yet. Mother Nature has given us a few nice days, but she’s always ready to remind us that she’s the boss. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call a repairman out out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall can bury your air conditioner in the snow, hindering its performance when the temperatures begin to warm up for the season. Not to mention it can hinder a high-efficiency system from operating as such. The situation could become an even larger problem too if you don’t prep for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are preparations you can do as a homeowner to help your air conditioner work properly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the upcoming days and weeks.

  1. Keep a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Check the area regularly to make sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that may have piled up during the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, putting a cover over your air conditioner could end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner may be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, possibly meaning damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Huntsville will probably swing up and down over the last few days of colder temperatures, you can’t count out the chance of weather that can impact the performance of your air conditioner. At All Weather Heating & Air Conditioning Inc in Huntsville, we are always available to check any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re related to air conditioner service or buying a new system.
